The “Giardino dei Semplici” in Florence was born as a vegetable garden of medicinal plants and is located in the core of town, a few steps from Piazza San Marco.
It was founded in 1545 by Duke Cosimo I dei Medici and is considered the third oldest botanical garden in the world, here you can find some of the largest greenhouses of Italy and many tropical plants which generate medicinal products and food of great importance.
Nowadays, the vegetable garden has become a section of the Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, open to students and professors but not only. Also citiziens and tourists from all over the world come to visit this corner of paradise looking for a moment of escape from the chaos of the city and discovering the conservation and transmission of an ancient natural heritage.
